19 Mar 2025 Nine year old Henry has been picking up rubbish ever since he was four or five. At rugby he would be picking up rubbish and encouraging other kids to as well – much to the consternation of other parents as the rubbish wasn’t always clean! His picking up rubbish started in earnest during the lock downs in Darfield, Selwyn District. On walks he would always be picking up rubbish, so rubbish bags would go in the pram of his young sister and he was armed with an old pair of kitchen tongs to pick up the not always clean rubbish. Henry could never understand why people littered. He thinks it’s because they are selfish. He says they should find a rubbish bin and shouldn’t just chuck it away. He would always want to stop the car and pick up rubbish when driving anywhere. His grandfather would ration him to one lot of rubbish per trip otherwise going anywhere would take a lot of time! He has since moved to Morrinsville where the rubbish collection has continued. Over Christmas 24/25 his parents had to ration the rubbish bags he was using so he used his own pocket money to buy bags and tongs. The picture is of 2 March 2025, when the family went on a trip to Thames Beach. Henry scoured the beach and was pleased to report there was no rubbish! He did find a rusty pipe in the creek though, which he retrieved. Well done Henry — Thanks for Keeping New Zealand Beautiful. Share this page
