Congratulations to Thomas, our January Volunteer of the Month

Our first New Zealand Couriers volunteer of the month for 2025 is Thomas who is 12 years old and lives in Lower Hutt.

Thomas and his family regularly volunteer at Keep Hutt Valley Beautiful clean up events and events run in association with their partners Petone Beach Clean Up Crew, Kiwi Rail, Sustainable Coast- lines and Ghost Diving. Over the last 4 years Thomas has attended around 50 events across the Wellington region helping to remove rubbish from beaches, rivers and along the regional rail corridor.

Thomas likes exploring, nature and generally being outdoors. He especially enjoys a clean-up event at a new site, perhaps with some stinky mud to add to the fun and the opportunity to find some treasure inspired by metal detecting, magnet fishing and mudlarking.

Thomas has learned a lot about rubbish and its effects on our local environment and the creatures we share it with. He is very observant and is an excellent rubbish spotter, particularly discarded fishing line. He has noticed that plastic straws and bread tags are now much harder to find. His family have an ongoing competition to be the first to find clothes peg at each event.

Thank you, Thomas — You are an inspiration to us all.
