Congratulations to Luke McFarlane, our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for March 2022

Congratulations to Luke McFarlane, winner of our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for March.
Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month, March 2022 - Luke McFarlane
Luke is a dad and an English teacher in Papamoa who has a morning routine of running along the Papamoa beachline, collecting litter as he goes.

He’s collected a huge amount of litter this way; on one run he filled his backpack and had to borrow a laundry bag from a passerby, and the scales can clock over 10kg of trash over the course of just a 5km run!

Disappointed in the sheer amount of litter he kept finding, Luke set up a not-for-profit called Fulfilled NZ with his mate Dan, developing a website and app to track what he finds and encouraging Kiwis from across the country to also record their own clean ups. His mapped data illustrates the amazing efforts of people across the country, and with an ethos of “what we walk past today, we deem acceptable for tomorrow” Fulfilled NZ has been able to record the community’s efforts in covering 600km of coast, bush and suburbs whilst removing more than 1,000kg of litter.

He’s also bringing the lessons he’s learning into the classroom too, helping to inspire the next generation to keep their communities beautiful.
