Congratulations to Rabbit, our April Volunteer of the Month

Back in the 1990’s Rabbit (David Nottage) drove forestry trucks across the Desert Road, often three times a day. When he appeared in a TV 1 Trucking documentary driving Lana Cocroft he asked her “what do you see out the window?” She answered “the tussock, the weather and the volcanos”. When he asked her to look closer to the road she replied “Wow so much rubbish”.

(The documentary can still be viewed on YouTube. It’s called On the Road.)

After recovering from a heart attack in mid 2013, Rabbit was encouraged to stand for council. With only 4 words in his profile CLEANER HEALTHIER PROSPOROUS RUAPEHU he received the 2nd highest vote in the Waimarino.

Rabbit is very vocal about waste minimisation. reporting rubbish to council, getting it reported in the local paper and doing what he can to tidy it up as soon as possible. He reckons that lots of rubbish would disappear over night if a refund scheme for bottles and cans was implemented in New Zealand as it’s proven to work in other countries.

Often in his own time and using his own vehicle Councilor Rabbit ’gets up to his old tricks’ picking up rubbish that has been illegally dumped or overflowing from rubbish bins. When asked why he does it he replies that it drives him stupid when he sees so much rubbish around the place. Plus it saves the rate-payers from having to pay hundreds of dollars to get a contractor to pick it up.
